June is a wonderful time to celebrate Pride, but Pride is worthy of our year-round support! There are many ways to support the LGBTQ+ community, celebrate diversity, and ensure others feel welcome and safe. This week, we’re sharing some of the ways in which you can share your support, both locally and otherwise.
Attend Community Events
Each year, there are numerous Pride events throughout different cities, such as parades and markets. However, these are far from the only events focused on making a difference in the LGBTQ+ community!
This weekend, for instance, Market In The Alley is hosting a plethora of businesses that are looking to put the event’s proceeds towards The Center, a local safe haven for the diverse Las Vegas community.
You can also keep an eye out for events at local coffee shops, bars, libraries, or spaces like The Center, where you can engage with other community members, keep learning, and see how you can make a difference.
Support LGBTQ+-Owned Businesses
Uplifting LGBTQ+ community members by supporting their businesses, amplifying their voices, and giving them ample space to share their stories is the least we can do in the fight for equality. Neon Cactus Vintage is one of our favorite local LGBTQ+-owned businesses in the Las Vegas Valley, offering a wide range of vintage treasures and handmade standout pieces. You can find their beautiful shop on Fremont Street!
Volunteer
Spaces like The Center also offer opportunities to volunteer, giving you a chance to give back to the community while also learning more about the crucial resources that are available. Volunteers help keep services as low-cost as possible, allowing these resources to be even more accessible to those who need them. Safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community to gather or seek assistance are so important, and your contributions can make a huge different in someone’s life.
Donate
Offering financial support to community organizations when you have the means to do so is a great way of helping out. Like with volunteering, this can help keep important resources accessible to the community, and it can allow for ongoing research and outreach in the long-term.
Be There For The People In Your Life
Being available as a friend and support system for those in your life who might identify as LGBTQ+ is one of the most important things you can do. This encompasses speaking up for what’s right, being an active listener, doing your own research, and giving others the space to share what they’re comfortable sharing and making sure they know they’re supported and cared for. It’s important that the LGBTQ+ community feels safe, respected, and heard, so be sure to do your part by being there for others!
