It’s important to note that Black-owned businesses deserve our support year-round. For Black History Month, we’re taking the time to evaluate our efforts in supporting the Black community and highlighting some local Black-owned businesses that we highly recommend you check out!

This week, we’re eager to share some of our favorite local stops focused on food and beverage.

To quench your thirst, sip on something at...

Café Lola

We also raved about Café Lola in our blog about festive wintertime beverages, but we had to recommend them again. We can’t get enough of the Instagrammable decor, uniquely adorable treats, and the notable flavor that goes into each of their creations. This spot is also one of our favorites due to how versatile it is; you can host a themed gathering (post-COVID, of course), enjoy breakfast with your little one, or simply stop by for your lunch break!

The Coffee Class

We absolutely love The Coffee Class, a “Vegas-born speciality coffee house.” They aim to set high expectations in all that they do by delivering top-notch coffee concoctions with great food to match. Their focus for 2021? Innovation. We can’t wait to learn more about what that means for this exceptional spot.

Philly Freeze-Me

Owned by a Philly native with a love for authentic “Water ice,” also known as Italian ice, Philly Freeze-Me is an excellent spot to grab a cool treat of your own. We love the extensive selection of flavors, from sour apple and strawberry lemonade to piña colada and pistachio. This shop even brings fun for all ages to the menu, with an alcohol-infused adult menu on tap and additional toppings and infusions to-go!

For a hearty meal, check out...

Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles

Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles was born out of the perfect original recipe and quickly became a soul food staple! Whether you’re drooling over a waffle sammich, biscuits and gravy, shrimp and grits, or banana pudding, Lo-Lo’s has got ya covered. Everything on the menu is home-cooked with love, and we’re on a mission to try it all!

Soul Food Cafe

Can’t get enough soul food? Us either! Soul Food Cafe is a great spot to find some other classic dishes, like pork chops, BBQ ribs, and catfish. There’s also a heaping helping of southern side dishes available, from fried okra and green beans to corn bread and potato salad. If you’re having a hard time choosing what to order, don’t sweat it – we did too.

Gritz Cafe

If you couldn’t tell by the name, Gritz Cafe prides themselves on one thing in particular: their grits! This southern classic is formulated to have the perfect taste and texture, and it pairs well with any of the main courses, from breakfast favorites to fish platters. Don’t forget the sweet tea! We’d also recommend saving some room for dessert. Sweet potato pie, peach cobbler, or lemon cake, anyone?

Big Jerk

Big Jerk serves up classic Caribbean food for the whole family, with stew, lobster tail, and jerk chicken being only a few of the crave-worthy items lining the menu. Grab a rack of ribs for the whole crew or settle down with a sammy all your own – the choice is yours, and you can’t go wrong. In fact, we’re eyeing a combo plate right now.

Old Soul

For an elevated experience, opt for a reservation at Old Soul at World Market. Fried green tomatoes, liver and onions, meatloaf, and peach cobbler pound cake are some of the standout offerings from this fresh twist on grandma’s kitchen. Grab a cocktail or two and settle in for an incredible dining experience.

Still have room for dessert? Stop by...

Chocolate Chip Cookie Company

Chocolate Chip Cookie Company knows that milk and cookies are the perfect pairing. A wide variety of mouthwatering cookies are waiting for you, from classics like chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin to lesser-found flavors like cinnamon sugar and banana walnut! Catering an event or hosting a party in the future? Order an entire tray, or maybe even a cookie cake. You’ll have to stop yourself from stealing the last slice!

Braud’s Funnel Cake Cafe

If you think funnel cakes are (sadly) reserved for theme parks and state fairs, we’ve got some great news for you: you’re wrong! At Braud’s Funnel Cake Cafe, gourmet funnel cakes are always in the cards, along with soda floats and heaping bowls of ice cream. Support your local team with a Golden Knights-themed funnel cake or indulge in a s’mores combination. There are so many incredible flavor options, from PB&J and Nutella to bacon and maple syrup. We can’t wait to try everything!

Have you ordered from any of these amazing Black-owned shops yet? What are you looking forward to trying first?
