BlogCommunityFood and BeverageLocal BusinessLocal Economy3 Ways You Can Support Local Businesses This Holiday Season, November 2020

11月 4, 2020by Taylor Dodson0

As we inch closer to holiday-shopping season, it’s important to consider where we make our purchases from. Do you tend to order gifts from big-box chains or specific brand sites? Do you stop by local businesses and nearby markets or seek out independent artists and makers to support?

If you’ve never done the latter, maybe it’s time to think about it! Especially as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, our fellow community members could really use some support – why not help them out by changing up your usual holiday routine? You might end up discovering a new favorite maker or venue, and you could end up with a personalized gift or experience that’s second to none. Below, we’ve detailed a few of the ways you can help out small business owners in your area and beyond.

Through Thoughtful Gifts

Female friends are exchanging gifts and feeling excited.

Oftentimes, small businesses can provide thoughtful, personalized, one-of-a-kind gifts that would be hard to find elsewhere. While these can sometimes be more expensive than items you’d find at big-box stores, the quality is often far superior, and the human touch and personal elements involved in the design is well worth the cost if you have the means.

Independent artists spend hours upon hours diving into their craft and learning how to perfect their creations. From soaps and scrubs to candles and jewelry, or embroidered accessories, paintings, and gift baskets, the gift options are virtually endless. You can stop by specific venues or visit markets and pop-ups in your area to do a walkthrough and discover some makers whose work speaks to you. Or, you can do an online search for different types of artists and ask friends and family for recommendations!

Below are a few of our favorite spaces to grab personalized prezzies for your loved ones.

Neon Cactus Vintage in Las Vegas offers custom stained glass pieces. Whether it’s jewelry or home decor, your options for surprising the recipient with some stunning one-of-a-kind artwork are virtually endless.

For the person who loves to be pampered, try a gift voucher for a spa day at La Vie Nail Bar in Burlingame, California.

If you know someone who always needs a little caffeine boost, how about treating them to some coffee or tea? Vegas Coffee is a family-owned business that offers stellar gift baskets with all sorts of blends, and Brew Tea Bar offers e-gift cards so you can encourage others to get their boba fix at either of two locations in the Vegas Valley.

Finally, if you’re looking to send a loved one a bouquet, try a beautiful arrangement from Candace’s Flowers. This shop even offers ongoing subscriptions for continued surprises.

Pro-tip: If choosing the perfect gift yourself makes you nervous, you can always ask the artist if they provide gift cards or vouchers! Many times, they will do their best to accommodate you or help you make the right choice.

With A Delicious Outing

Group of people are dining during COVID.

Going out to eat is a very popular way to gather with friends and family around the holidays.

Instead of visiting a major chain restaurant you’ve been to over and over, why not try a local spot? Whether you opt for a family-owned venue that’s been around for decades or attend a grand opening of a new location, you’re supporting your community and having a new dining experience. Small business owners want to provide experiences that visitors love, and they work hard to promote uniquely exceptional products. Who knows? You might find yourself wanting to go back to your chosen venue again and again.

By Spreading The Word

If you’re choosing to save rather than spend this season, there are still ways you can show your support! Engaging with businesses virtually through social media and by posting positive reviews across different platforms is an excellent way to help get them noticed. Additionally, directly sharing your love for a brand with friends and family is an effective way to bring them more attention, as people often take trusted recommendations from loved ones to heart!
