9月 9, 2020by Taylor Dodson0

If you’re a longtime Las Vegas local, it’s possible you already have a favorite hiking trail. It also might feel impossible to choose. After all – there are so many incredible locations for you to investigate within your favorite parks! But if you’re new to the area, it can be overwhelming to figure out where to begin. To make things a little simpler, we’ve mapped out four of the best starting points for the explorer in you. Each of these spots are worthy of further research so that you can create the perfect personal itinerary. So grab your gear, and let’s get on with it!

Red Rock Canyon

There’s no doubt Red Rock Canyon provides an unbelievable scenic route for explorers of all kinds – even if you prefer to stay inside your car! A 13-mile road stretches through beautiful mountains and cliffs, with hiking trails abound. From cactus-covered loops to hidden springs, there’s truly something for everyone, whether you’re a beginner or a more seasoned adventurer.

If you’re unable to make a visit right now or looking to show someone you love a trail you’ve been through before, you’re in luck. Red Rock Canyon even offers a few “virtual hikes,” allowing you to digitally wander a path with commentary from a professional coming through along the way.

Mt Charleston

The Spring Mountains, more commonly referred to by locals as “Mt Charleston,” are home to over 60 miles of hiking trails. These paths range from beginner-friendly to experienced-hikers-only, with elevation ranging from 6,000 feet to nearly 12,000 feet at Charleston Peak. Vegas-goers looking for a little bit of rare fun in the desert snow should be delighted by the variety of activities offered by a trip to Mt Charleston.

Lake Mead & Lake Mohave

Popular destinations Lake Mead and Lake Mohave are part of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which serves to protect a large portion of the Mohave Desert. Days out on the water are frequently enjoyed here, but exploring on foot is one of the best ways to meander through the area. A blooming ecosystem and mesmerizing rock formations are around every corner, with ranger-guided excursions available all year. You can even access the Hoover Dam and a variety of different springs, including hot springs, from different trails in this area!

Valley Of Fire

Valley Of Fire State Park is home to some truly incredible history, with 40,000 acres of rock formations that can be observed from every angle. Local sandstone dates back to the Jurassic period, and petroglyph carvings can be spotted in different areas indicating man’s presence around 2,500 years ago – though humankind’s history in this region is known to date back as far as 11,000 years. Whether you’re looking for a daytime hike or a weekend camping trip, there’s much to be explored at Valley Of Fire, even if you’re not a stranger to the park.

While hiking throughout the Las Vegas Valley can be an unforgettable experience, it’s also important to take the proper precautions based on seasonal weather patterns and local ecosystems. Always be aware of heat, snow, flood, and lightning advisories, and be on the lookout for dangerous critters, like scorpions, snakes, and spiders. If you go for a dip in a local natural spring, be sure to keep your head above water to avoid dangerous encounters with amoebas. Know your route ahead of time and keep a map on hand. And, finally, have emergency supplies, including a first-aid kit, spare batteries, a flashlight, and water with you at all times. (Oh, and make sure your cell phone is charged.)
