6月 8, 2020by Taylor Dodson0

Adopting a furry friend is a major decision that should come with plenty of research and thought. With shelters, rescues, and pet shops in abundance and hundreds of thousands of animals in need of a home, it can be difficult to know where to begin – and where you should go to adopt. Fortunately, shelters and rescues can be found in many cities.

Whether you need to start out by fostering, visit with an animal before adopting to see if there’s a connection, or learn more about an animal’s background, these venues often have all of the information and resources you might need throughout the adoption process. If you’re eager to adopt a lifelong companion and want to contribute positively to your community in doing so, here are three reasons why visiting a shelter or a rescue can help you do just that.

Adopting from a shelter or a rescue saves lives - literally.

Breeding mills contribute to animal overpopulation, and choosing to support the efforts of a shelter or a rescue allows you to help break this dangerous cycle. Although many shelters and rescues do their part to prevent animals from being euthanized, these locations are many animals’ last stop if they are unable to be adopted. Bringing home a furry friend from one of these locations gives them a fair chance at a life full of happiness by your side, and supporting these organizations helps ensure that more animals are properly cared for going forward.

Embracing a new companion results in an economic boost.

When you adopt a new pet, you’re more likely to venture out to secure the supplies needed to care for them or provide them with the exercise and socialization they require! In fact, Americans spent $95.7 billion on goods and services for their pets in 2019. A trip to a local dog park can easily result in taking a coffee break at a nearby cafe before heading off to refill your supply of pet food or grab some shiny new toys. Getting out and about with your pet can also be a great way to meet new people and do some networking, thus connecting the local community even further!

Humans benefit from the companionship, too!

While an animal’s adoption certainly directly saves their life, it’s important to keep in mind the benefits the pet’s new paw-rents are bound to receive, as well! An energetic, curious animal is sure to keep their human active, be it through a stroll in the park or an intense tug-of-war session.

It’s also simply delightful to have a constant source of emotional support there to brighten your day and remind you how loved you are! Studies have continuously shown that the presence of a pet can greatly reduce stress and anxiety. A pet is likely to remind you of their neverending loyalty and appreciation day after day, and there’s no doubt that the snuggles and kisses provided by an animal make for an immensely positive shift in your daily routine.
